Hoshen's professional guidance

This material reflects Hoshen's professional practice. It is not legislation and establishes no legal duty. Adapt it to your site, your risks and the requirements that apply to you.

Suggested length: 5–10 minutes

Why it matters

Back and muscle injuries accumulate over time and do not necessarily come from one lift. They come from habit, and are prevented by habit.

Key points

  1. 1.Before lifting, assess the weight and the route. An unknown load is not lifted alone.
  2. 2.Use a mechanical aid when one is available. A trolley beats "it's only for a moment".
  3. 3.Lift with the legs, keep the back straight and the load close to the body.
  4. 4.Do not twist while lifting. Move your feet.
  5. 5.A load that blocks your view is not lifted — split it or ask for help.

What to check today

  • Are the mechanical aids available and serviceable?
  • Is anything lifted by hand only because that is how it has always been done?
  • Does the storage height suit the weight?
