Toolbox talk: manual handling
Hoshen — Safety, Hygiene and Environmental Engineering · Hoshen's professional guidance
Suggested length: 5–10 minutes
Why it matters
Back and muscle injuries accumulate over time and do not necessarily come from one lift. They come from habit, and are prevented by habit.
Key points
- 1.Before lifting, assess the weight and the route. An unknown load is not lifted alone.
- 2.Use a mechanical aid when one is available. A trolley beats "it's only for a moment".
- 3.Lift with the legs, keep the back straight and the load close to the body.
- 4.Do not twist while lifting. Move your feet.
- 5.A load that blocks your view is not lifted — split it or ask for help.
What to check today
- Are the mechanical aids available and serviceable?
- Is anything lifted by hand only because that is how it has always been done?
- Does the storage height suit the weight?
Discussion question
What is the most awkward lift in your work?
