Why it matters

A fall from height is among the most fatal events at work, and even a low fall can cause serious injury.

Key points

  1. 1.Work at height requires appropriate training and certification. There is no "just this once".
  2. 2.Check the equipment before every use: harness, rope, anchor point, ladder.
  3. 3.The anchor point is chosen in advance and intended for the purpose — not a random pipe or handrail.
  4. 4.A ladder is not a workstation for prolonged work or for two-handed work.
  5. 5.Cordon off beneath work at height. A falling object is no less dangerous than a falling person.
  6. 6.Weather changes the conditions. Wind, rain or a wet surface require a fresh assessment.

What to check today

  • Is the certification of everyone working at height in date?
  • Are the anchor points marked and known?
  • Is the area beneath cordoned off?
