Why it matters

Machine guarding prevents contact with moving parts. Most serious machinery injuries happen when a guard was removed, defeated or not put back.

Key points

  1. 1.A machine with a missing or defeated guard is not operated. That is a work stoppage, not a remark.
  2. 2.Cleaning, clearing a jam or maintenance — only after a full stop and energy isolation.
  3. 3.Refitting the guard is part of the job, not an optional step at the end.
  4. 4.The emergency stop is tested and stays accessible — not blocked by a box or a trolley.
  5. 5.Loose clothing, jewellery and untied hair are dangerous near moving parts.

What to check today

  • Are all guards in place?
  • Are the emergency stops accessible and tested?
  • Is any machine cleaned while running?

Discussion question

Which machine here is most tempting to defeat a guard on, and why?
