Toolbox talk: machine safety
Hoshen — Safety, Hygiene and Environmental Engineering · Hoshen's professional guidance
Suggested length: 5–10 minutes
Why it matters
Machine guarding prevents contact with moving parts. Most serious machinery injuries happen when a guard was removed, defeated or not put back.
Key points
- 1.A machine with a missing or defeated guard is not operated. That is a work stoppage, not a remark.
- 2.Cleaning, clearing a jam or maintenance — only after a full stop and energy isolation.
- 3.Refitting the guard is part of the job, not an optional step at the end.
- 4.The emergency stop is tested and stays accessible — not blocked by a box or a trolley.
- 5.Loose clothing, jewellery and untied hair are dangerous near moving parts.
What to check today
- Are all guards in place?
- Are the emergency stops accessible and tested?
- Is any machine cleaned while running?
Discussion question
Which machine here is most tempting to defeat a guard on, and why?
