Toolbox talk: slips, trips and housekeeping
Hoshen — Safety, Hygiene and Environmental Engineering · Hoshen's professional guidance
Suggested length: 5–10 minutes
Why it matters
Slips and trips are among the most common causes of injury at work, and are nearly always the result of something left in the wrong place.
Key points
- 1.A blocked walkway is both a trip hazard and an escape route that will not work in an emergency.
- 2.A spill is dealt with immediately, not later. Mark it temporarily until it is cleaned.
- 3.Cables on the floor are secured or protected, not laid across a walkway.
- 4.Waste and packaging are cleared at the end of each shift, not piled beside a workstation.
- 5.Missing light turns a small hazard into a dangerous one. Report a failed lamp.
What to check today
- Walk the escape routes — are they all clear?
- Is there a wet or oily patch that has not been dealt with?
- Is there a pile that has been growing for a week?
Discussion question
Which spot here gets untidy fastest, and what would help?
