Suggested length: 5–10 minutes

Why it matters

A forklift weighs several times what a car does, its visibility is limited and it does not stop quickly. Most injuries are to pedestrians, not operators.

Key points

  1. 1.A forklift is operated only by an authorised operator holding a valid licence.
  2. 2.Separate pedestrian walkways from vehicle routes, and keep to the separation in practice.
  3. 3.Do not pass under raised forks and do not stand within the turning radius.
  4. 4.Make eye contact with the operator before crossing a route.
  5. 5.An unstable or oversized load is not moved.
  6. 6.A daily pre-shift check — brakes, horn, forks, tyres, leaks.

What to check today

  • Is the walkway marking clear and not worn away?
  • Is there a known blind spot that has not been dealt with?
  • Is the daily check actually done, and recorded?

Discussion question

Where do pedestrians and forklifts come closest to each other?
