Toolbox talk: emergency response
Hoshen — Safety, Hygiene and Environmental Engineering · Hoshen's professional guidance
Suggested length: 5–10 minutes
Why it matters
In an emergency there is no time to read a procedure. What actually happens is what people already know and have practised.
Key points
- 1.Everyone knows the escape route from their own position, and the alternative.
- 2.The assembly point is known, and nobody leaves it until the roll call.
- 3.Who raises the alarm, who is told, and what the site's emergency number is.
- 4.An extinguisher is used only on a small event, with the escape route open and no personal risk.
- 5.People are evacuated before anybody tries to save equipment.
- 6.After an event, work does not resume until the cause is checked and the area approved.
What to check today
- Are the escape routes clear and marked?
- When was the last drill held?
- Is the emergency team list and its phone numbers current?
Discussion question
If the alarm sounded now, where would you go?
